Magneto represents the next generation of maintenance and inspection robots that can minimise risk and increase safety in industrial work environments to ensure workforce protection, particularly around confined space entry.

 

Confined space entry (CSE) work is one of the most frequent, yet hazardous activities undertaken in industrial workplaces. Despite the regularity of confined space entry and work, the number of serious or fatal injuries associated with confined space scenarios is trending up in some countries, while in other countries incidents have not reduced in more than two decades.

Research and development of artificial technology (AI) technology specifically tailored to industrial environments has honed Magneto’s ability to eliminate CSE in industrial workplaces altogether. With cutting edge obstacle avoidance and object detection, Magneto is able to predict and anticipate navigation and detection issues semi-autonomously, removing the need for humans to enter high risk settings.

Industry Partnership

After the early prototype of Magneto was developed and demonstrated by CSIRO’s Data61 Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group, Data61 partnered with Nexxis, an Australian organisation specialising in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment, pipe inspection cameras and laser alignment tools, to bring Magneto to market. It is the culmination of commercial industry knowledge and proven research partners that has facilitated rapid prototyping and deployment of the Magneto platform.

With inbuilt AI capable of completely autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance and intelligent inspection, the Magneto platform offers a truly hands-free solution to asset maintenance and data collection tasks.

 

 

Magneto is controlled using a software stack developed at Nexxis in close collaboration with CSIRO’s Data61. The stack is built using an open source software platform Robotics Operating System (ROS) allowing easy integration of additional devices like cameras, sensors and actuators to create a combined robotic system.

Specific to Magneto are drivers controlling the actuation of each limb. This software is capable of handling a varied amount of legs, with independent degrees of freedom (DOF) depending on the use case.

 

 

Location and environment mapping software used in Magneto was developed by Nexxis with collaboration with Data61 for the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, which is used for autonomous exploration in confined space environments.

Early Adopters Program

Nexxis has established the Early Adopters Program (Program) to enable select participants test and evaluate Nexxis Technology with their own sensors in real world operational environments.  Participants are required to share data collected and lessons with Nexxis to facilitate ongoing refinement of Magneto technologies.  The Program is pre-commercial and therefore has limited participation capacity. 

When the Program ends parties may choose to graduate to a full commercial agreement when commercial-ready.

 

The Magneto platform has an open and available roadmap linked to a sophisticated leasing model designed around switching capital expenditure to operational expenditure coupled with a service agreement built around technology. Commercial agreement features include:
